Thoughts on Haiti...

Throughout history there have been one disaster after another. Take 9/11 for example. We as America banded together for comfort, love, and patriotism. But this unity only last but for awhile. Also during a catastrophe celebrities, and business’s take a interest. This has always made me wonder. Why are they helping these people who are in dyer need, but yet their company is not willing to make a donation for a youth soccer team. Is it for the positive publicity? Or do they really care?

Haiti suffered a massive earthquake. Leaving more than 150,000 dead. Many more missing. This is one of the greatest disasters in the history of Haiti. Communication was cut off and many didn’t know if their relatives were alive. It only took about 2 days for all the celebrities and companies to be full forced into “helping” Haiti. My twitter account was full of tweets from celebrities expressing their emotion and urging their followers to donate money to the numerous relief efforts. At the surface it seems so good that these celebrities are using there “social power” to do some good for these people who are in such need. Many of them have sent items essential for living; many of them have made large financial contributions to help. Same as some companies such as Lowe’s who donated $500K to help rebuilding efforts. This is a great example of lending a helping hand. But how many truly care about these people? We as the general public may never know. But as long as the funds are being used for what the people of Haiti need, in order to help rebuild their country and lives, it is truly what counts. Despite the many doubts that some may have.

It will be interesting to see how long people stay concerned with the people of Haiti. I hope the public will keep interested in helping these people as they try to rebuild what is left of their lives and their country.

  1. It is crazy to see that so many celebrities got together in that short amount of time to help Haiti, but it is also true that sometimes it may be for good publicity and helping them from a far rather than being up close and personal and helping them out. Nice blog :)

  2. Times like this really do get you thinking. It's always been frustrating to me how everyone joins together after something like this, but it rarely lasts long.
